Kenneth L. Ellerton was born June 16, 1920, on the family farm near Holabird, S.D., to Christopher and Mabel (Petersen) Ellerton. After he finished the eighth grade, the family moved to Custer, S.D.
Ken married Alice Mihills in Newcastle, Wyo., July 10, 1943. He retired from the S.D. State Highway Department after over 30 years. He made the most of his retirement, hunting, fishing and most of all, four-wheeling.
Ken, now of Spearfish, S.D., died April 29, 2013, at Rapid City (S.D.) Regional Hospital. He was 92.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Alice in 2004; son, Dwayne; daughter, Janice Burnside; and two great-grand babies.
Ken is survived by his daughters, Connie (Terry) Frease of Rapid City and Terri (Bill) Morrison of Spearfish; three brothers, Sherman Ellerton of Rapid City, Alvin Ellerton of Rapid City and Marlin Ellerton of Bakersfield, Calif; sister, Arlene Cannon of Kennewick, Wash.; daughter-in-law, Barb Ellerton of Pine Haven, Wyo., 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Memorial services were May 4 at Custer Community Church with Pastors Bill Comfort and Kirstin Kellaher of Calvary Lutheran Church in Rapid City officiating.
A memorial has been established to the Custer Fire Department.
