Madge R. Scott was born Aug. 14, 1909, in Edgemont, S.D., to James Roy and Clara E. (Parkin) Robison. She lived with her parents on a homestead in Niobrara County in Wyoming, and for four years she attended Robinson School on the Cheyenne River in Niobrara County.
At the age of 12 she and her family moved to Edgemont, where she received the rest of her education through her sophomore year at the Edgemont Public School District. Madge then became a beautician, working at a shop in Edgemont.
On Dec. 29, 1929, she married Ralph Scott and the couple ranched in the Provo, S.D., area for three years, then Minnekahta, S.D., for two years and finally to a ranch between Argyle and Ivanhoe, S.D., in Custer County where they lived for 45 years. The couple had two sons, Gerald and Donald. In 1979 she and Ralph then moved to Custer, S.D., after they retired from ranching.
Madge raised a large garden, canning 100 quarts each of beans, peas, corn, fruit and meat. Madge also became an accomplished seamstress and learned to crochet and knit. She took piano lessons at a young age and became an accomplished pianist. Madge had a special love for music and entertained herself, as well as others, until she was 79. A broken arm slowed her down, and at 98 she lost her ability to play due to a dislocated shoulder.
Madge was a member of the Custer Senior Citizens, Rebecca Lodge in Edgemont, a 75-year member of the Minnekahta Valley Ladies Club and a member of the Custer County Historical Society, where she volunteered at the museum during the summer.
Madge had a special love for her family and friends. She loved to travel and at 91 she made a trip to Branson, Mo.
