John E. Christensen

John E. Christensen was born April 1, 1923, at Parker, S.D., to Andrew and Edith (Lakings) Christensen. He attended grade school through the 10th grade at Prairie Star Country School northeast of Reliance, S.D., and graduated from Oacoma (S.D.) High School in 1941.
After high school, he returned to farming with his father until enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps on April 21, 1945. After his discharge on May 19, 1946, he returned home to continue farming with his father on the family farm. John met Ruth Norman in June of 1946 and on Oct. 26, 1946, they were united in marriage. John and Ruth farmed and raised Simmental cattle, sheep and pigs until semi-retiring and moving to Oacoma in 1997 when his grandson began taking over the family farm operations.
John was a member of the American Legion Johnson-Peterson Post No. 179 of Reliance for 59 years and since 1961 was a member of the United Church of Christ in Chamberlain. He was a member of the Simmental Association, Stockgrower’s Association, Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, Fairland Township Board,and Lindley School Board. He received the Outstanding Young Farmer Award in 1957.
John died on March 5, 2010, vehicle vehicle accident near Pukwana, S.D. He was 86 years old.
Funeral services will be March 11 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in Chamberlain with burial in the Graceland Cemetery at Oacoma. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. at the United Church of Christ in Chamberlain.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his wife and a sister, Dorothy Cadwell.
Survivors include four daughters, Edith Christensen and close friend Wally Jacobson of Howard, S.D., Ethel Johnson of Norwood, Minn., Karen (Don) Kraus of Custer, S.D., and Chris (Rick) Laughlin of Brandon, S.D.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a step great-grandchild; and a sister, Donna Bauer of Mitchell, S.D.
