Richard Campbell

Richard Eugene Campbell was born at home in Anselmo, Neb., on Nov. 1, 1940, to Roy and Ruby (Ballenger) Campbell where his family lived for a few years after his birth. The family then moved to North Bend, Ore. Richard graduated from high school in North Bend and joined the Air Force Nov. 23, 1959. He was honorably discharged Oct. 2, 1963. He moved back to Nebraska in the late ’60s and lived in Grand Island, Neb., for several years working in the construction business. He married Shelia Henderson in 1974 in Grand Island, and to this union one son was born. In 1975, they moved to Broken Bow, Neb. Richard later moved to Florida for several years to be near his sister. In 1999 he moved to Custer, S.D., where he worked as a certified nurse assistant and did handyman jobs. In 2003, Richard was awarded Veteran of the Month for saving a fellow veteran from choking. Richard enjoyed camping, fishing, watching football, crossword puzzles and was an avid reader. Richard Eugene died Jan. 20, 2010, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Hot Springs, S.D. He was 69. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Ruby and Roy; and his brother, William (Bill). He is survived by one son, Shane (Lynn) Campbell of Giltner, Neb.; one sister, Sharon (Darrell) Roth of Cocoa Beach, Fla.; and two granddaughters, Madison and Mylie Campbell. Memorial services were Jan. 23 at McColley’s Chapel of the Hills in Custer with Pastor Mark Crossman officiating.
