The nation’s best!

The Smiths stand under their restaurant sign after being named best burger joint in the nation by TripAdvisor user reviews.

It’s not every day TripAdvisor  — or its users — names you the number 1 best burger in the United States. But that’s what just happened to Claude and Christie Smith, owners of Black Hills Burger and Bun Co. TripAdvisor made the announcement July 1 and word quickly spread.
A TV journalist from Rapid City was the one to break it to the Smiths.
“She wanted to be the first one to interview us, so she came down that evening so we could go live at 6 p.m.,” said Christie.  “We were shocked; we had no idea. My heart skipped a beat and then I almost cried,” she said.
Claude attributes this most recent honor to their fresh ingredients and the fact that they make almost everything in their restaurant from scratch.
“It’s consistency,” he said. “It’s the fact that we are both here, every single shift, every single day.”
Christie added, “Not one burger has been made by anyone other than Claude.”
They also give a lot of credit to their great crew, including their daughter, Jessica, who makes the desserts.
“Things get a little loud, a little crazy. But at the end of the day, we’re all friends again,” Claude said. He says it’s a typical restaurant kitchen.
