Community rallies behind Fairburn school

The community of Fairburn turned out at an open forum Thursday evening to discuss their thoughts on closing the 12-student Fairburn school. Custer School District Board of Education members Tanya Olson, Brian Lintz and Larry Vickers, along with superintendent Scott Lepke and rural schools principal Jeremy Hurd met with the community.
The last two years, the district has cut $1.3 million from a $7 million budget — 18 percent.
“Obviously this has been difficult and has impacted everyone involved,” Olson said. “We don’t know what is going to happen, what the legislature will do and what the outcome of Initiated Measure 15 will be. We’re not just losing state monies, but we’re also losing federal monies.”
