The old joke, “I’m from the government; I’m here to help you,” may have some truth in it these days, at least where real estate is concerned. The first-time homebuyer’s tax credit of up to $8,000 (10 percent of the purchase price of a home) and the tax credit for existing home buyers of up to $6,500 has caused a surge in listings and an increase in buyer activity in the Southern Hills, according to Sheila Green, broker associate at Statewide Real Estate in Custer. “I believe here in the Southern Hills, the market is getting better, as far as sales are concerned,” said Green. “We are seeing an increase in number of listings, which should work to the buyer’s advantage by giving them a better choice and lower price.” Available only in the print version of the Custer County Chronicle.
