With just two weeks until the regional wrestling meet, the Custer Wildcat wrestling team is right where it needs to be.
“We’re right where we need to be at,” coach Jared Webster said. “We’ll get one more tough tournament in this weekend and relax next week. I’m very pleased with how we are. I can’t complain.”
The wrestling team competed at the 20 plus team Belle Fourche Invitational over the weekend, where seven wrestlers took home medals. Clayton Wahlstrom (182 pounds) took first place, Tyler Hughes (120) took fifth and Blake Jensen (126) took sixth. Both Chasen Cole (132) and Mike Murray (220) took second place, while Jahrett Schiemer (120) and David Sigdestad (195) both took third place.
“We wrestled really well at the tournament and were good in our moves,” Webster said.
Earlier in the week, the Wildcats hosted a quadrangular featuring Bennett County, Chadron and Douglas/Rapid City Christian. In the first dual of the night, Custer defeated the Bennett County Warriors 53-27, racking up 36 points before losing in a pin.
“I was very impressed with the kids,” Webster said. “They had great moves and movement and they didn’t give up pins like they had been.”
The Wildcats took on Chadron next, defeating them 44-19. In the match against Douglas/Rapid City Christian, the final points came down to the last match. After a close match, Custer won the points, besting Douglas/Rapid City Christian 36-29.
“They kept matches close when we had to,” Webster said. “They did great.”
The Wildcats will head to Hill City this weekend for the Hill City Invitational Tournament at Gin’s Gym before taking a week break before Regions on Feb. 22.
