Wahlstrom takes first at Chadron

It was another challenging week for the Custer High School wrestling team as they competed against 27 other teams at the Chadron Invitational Tournament. In the past, only a few wrestlers have placed in the top eight at the tournament; however, this year three wrestlers placed, including senior Clayton Wahlstrom (182 pounds) earning the top spot.
“Clayton has had a good season with some tough matches,” coach Jared Webster said. “He still has some tough matches coming at regions and state, so were getting him ready for those with these invitationals and tournaments.”
Wahlstrom’s win was the first at the Chadron tournament for the Wildcats. Last year, only two wrestlers placed in the top. Wahlstrom was also named the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.
Fellow seniors Mike Murray and Chasen Cole also placed at the tournament. Murray, who was non-seeded, took fourth place after pinning the third-ranked wrestler earlier in the quarterfinals. Cole earned fifth placed after winning four and losing two matches, despite wrestling while ill.
“It was a tough meet and the kids wrestled well,” Webster said. “Some still hesitated, but there were some very close matches.”
