A younger team needs to believe

Even though this year’s Custer High School wrestling team is young, they all have the potential to do well, according to head coach Jared Webster.
“I’m looking forward to the younger kids stepping up, seeing where they’re at and how they can improve,” he said. “A lot of them have high goals and quite a few who can reach them. That’s great to have them.”
Webster said the team will lack in the lighter divisions, but does have quite a few wrestlers in the upper weights. With not very many additions to the team, Webster is looking for the team to learn more and have an understanding as to what is going on.
“They need to believe and have faith in themselves so they can go out and win those tough matches to make it to state,” he said.
The team lost three seniors (Bret Scott, Clay Seidler and Dylan Severyn) to graduation, but there are key wrestlers who will step up, including this year’s seniors.
“There were people behind those seniors who will fill that spot this year,” Webster said. “It’s their time to show what they have. They’ve been putting in the time and work.”
In order to be successful, Webster said the team needs to get better every week and hopefully peak at regions and state time.
“It’s going to be a learning experience between all these tournaments, so that will be nice,” he said. “We’ll have time to catch up.”
While the team hasn’t set a goal yet, each wrestler has made an individual goal.
“Every week we will talk about our goals and how that week went,” Webster said. “We’re changing things up and will be having more conversations. It will be different, but should be fun.”
Until the season officially kicks off, the team has been focusing on moves during practices.
“Once they learn the basics and get that figured out that, the rest will come,” Webster said.
The Wildcat wrestling team will kick off the season this weekend in the Custer Invitational Tournament Dec. 6-7 at the Armory. The first regular dual of the season will be at home on Thursday, Dec. 12, against Belle Fourche beginning at 6:30 p.m.
