’Cats, Burns take BHC title

After putting in a season full of hard work, both the Custer High School boys and girls cross country teams received their reward — the Black Hills Conference (BHC) title.
The boys team repeated as conference champions at the BHC meet in Hot Springs last Thursday, 24 points separating them and second place finisher, Spearfish. The boys were led by Logan Burns, who took the individual title.
“Logan ran conservatively for the first 800 and then he set a blistering pace up on the hills on the back side of the course,” coach Karen Karim said. “After finishing third last year to these same boys, Logan literally ran away from his competition, Eric Yeager from Hot Springs and Caleb Diggs from Douglas.”
Since all three runners are seniors, this race marked the last time the three will meet on a cross country course, putting an end to a long-standing rivalry. Yeager and Burns will race the next two weeks at the “A” region and state meet, while Diggs will race in the “AA” division.
“It’s been fun to watch the competition among these boys over the years,” Karim said.
Senior runner Brennan Witt also ran an outstanding race on the hilly course, placing fourth. Shane Herman and Matt Dvorak also helped with the team’s standing, earning 10th and 13th place, respectively. Ben Wahlstrom also ran in the varsity race, placing 22nd.
“These boys have consistently competed tough when they had to for the team, and now we are facing the two most important weeks of the season,” Karim said. “The best case scenario would be for us to have everyone healthy and injury-free going into the state meet. This takes luck, but we hope to be as close to 100 percent as possible by then.”
This past week, Patrick Witt took a break from competing as he is nursing a sore foot.
