Top ranked teams put lopsided defeats on Wildcats

The schedule couldn’t have possibly been more brutal for the Custer High School girls basketball team last week. Well, unless they played No. 1 and No. 2 instead of No. 1 and No. 3.

The girls played two of the three top rated schools in Class A basketball in a three day span a week ago, and came away with a pair of resounding losses, the latest a 69-11 pasting at the hands of No. 1 ranked St. Thomas More in Rapid City last Thursday night.

The girls were never in the game, falling behind 28-0 after the first quarter and scoring only one point the entire half. The Wildcats trailed 42-1 at halftime, their only point a Channell Alcott free throw.

“There is a reason they are the No. 1 team in the state,”â��Custer head coach Stephanie Ornelas said. “They are pretty flawless.” 

Sam McNeel was the team’s leading scorer in the loss, with six points. No other Wildcats scored more than two points. The Wildcats made only four field goals in the game.

“We could have worked a lot harder offensively, but they are a good team. It was hard to get a shot off against them. They trapped us here and there, and they run a great defensive trap.”
