Wahlstrom takes first at Hot Springs

The Custer High School wrestling team had a busy week with a Thursday quadrangular against Belle Fourche, Spearfish and Rapid City Central and an invitational hosted by Hot Springs over the weekend.
“We’re really trying to heal up and work on moves until after Christmas,” said head coach Jared Webster. “Hopefully after Christmas we’ll be solid in our moves and work our way through the line up.”
While Webster thought many of the kids wrestled well at the invitational, the team still needs to work on its aggressiveness and continue to improve.
Custer took fifth place at the Hot Springs Invitational with 139.50 points. Clayton Wahlstrom moved up to 182 pounds and defeated the third-ranked wrestler in the state, Bennett County’s Dalton McCollam, after a 5-2 decision. Wahlstrom also received the Holiday Extravaganza’s Most Outstanding Wrestler award.
“I just focused on winning,” he said. “I have been trying to bump up and get more competition. I had to work hard, get my takedowns and score.”
