Boys win region title, girls finish second

The boys team took the Regional championship title, as well as a first place finish with junior Logan Burns. The boys team also had every runner medal in the race and qualify for the state meet in Huron.
Burns was the first to cross the line with a time of 17:16 and a 42 second lead over the second place finisher, Hot Springs rival Eric Yager.
“He had an awesome day,” coach Karen Karim said. “Just a week after the Rapid City Journal featured his conference rivals, Yeager and Caleb Diggs, Logan thumped Yeager by more on his home course.”
Burns used the hills on the course to pull away from Yeager and win his first major cross country race.
“I’m extremely proud of his continued efforts in practice and improvement in races,” Karim said. “We look forward to one more big race this week.”
Brennan Witt was the next finisher for the Wildcats, placing fourth with a time of 18:16. His finish was key in the team’s first place finish.
“Brennan continues to close the gap on his competition and should be ready to go on the flat course in Huron,” Karim said.
Chris Pinkerton finished in 10th place with 18:39 as a time while Shane Herman finished 12th in 18:54.
“They managed to hang on to give us a one-point advantage over Spearfish,” Karim said.
Tyler Jones placed 13th with 19:04 and Matt Dvorak rounded out scoring for the Wildcats, placing 16th with a time of 19:08.
Spearfish took second place behind the Wildcats and St. Thomas More took third.
Custer also won the junior varsity race with Logan Huntington’s first place finish in the time of 19:32. Jace Woodward followed in fourth place, 20:18, Patrick Witt came in sixth, 21:13, and Gunner LeFebvre rounded out scoring with his ninth place finish in a time of 22 minutes flat.
