Overtime win sends ’Cats to state

David Hernandez’s looping header—a backwards header, no less—over the outstretched arms of Chamberlain’s goalie in the sixth minute of the first overtime period propelled Custer to a 3-2 win and a trip to the state tournament last Thursday afternoon in Custer.

Hernandez scored all three Custer goals in the win, none better than the game winner.

“I think the overtime goal from Graysen (Trandem, who had the assist) to David was the best I have seen in the last few years,” assistant coach Casey Trandem said.â��“The serve was perfect and David showed incredible control to send it on with his head over the goalie.”

 The game seemed as if it was going to be a blowout in favor of Custer, with the Wildcats scoring twice in the first 25 minutes—Hernandez’s first goal coming at the 12 minute mark of a pass from Sloan Shorb, and again when he ripped a three-yard shot into the goal in the 24th minute. The vast majority of the first half saw Custer dominate possession and take a 2-0 lead into the half on the cold, windy day.
