’Cats score early and often in rout of ’Diggers

Two weeks after gaining negative rushing yards and struggling on offense in general, the Custer Wildcats looked like a completely different team in a 45-26 pasting of the Lead-Deadwood Golddiggers last Saturday night. The game was the final game of the annual prospector bowl in Deadwood.

After falling behind 7-0 early, the Wildcats used a punt return touchdown by Jared Thomsen as the start of a 32-0 run that gave Custer a 33-6 lead heading into the final quarter, which was played entirely by Wildcat backups.

“The big difference is the offensive line is getting better,” Custer head coach Russ Bailey said. “They are opening up holes. We’re doing things at a faster pace. Everything is happening sooner offensively. Routes are quicker, routes are sharper and we are getting the ball out of the quarterback’s hand faster. All of that is making a whale of a difference as far as offense is concerned.”

Kenneth Myers once again led the rushing attack, grinding out 46 of Custer’s 96  yards on the ground, including a touchdown. Myers also caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Chase Glazier.
