At first glance, one might mistake the Custer High School golf team for the soccer team or some other team sport. That’s because it’s a record year in terms of number for the golf team, as head coach Paul Kelley welcomes 16 golfers to this year’s team.
“This is the most kids we have had in a long time,” Kelley said.
The team already has two tournaments under its belt, as the season began in Sturgis Aug. 13. Leading the way on this year’s team are seniors Cody Martinz and Rhett Larson, who have been joined on the varsity team by sophomore Adam Baker and freshman Lane Robb, eighth graders Noah Zacher, Cole Conard, Blake Martinz and junior Zach Hollick.
While the team is especially big this year, Kelley said the team is still young—10 of the golfers are freshmen or in middle school—and somewhat inexperienced.
