Gold Discovery Days winners announced

Gold Rush Fun Run
Chris Riley of Sioux Falls was the top finisher with a time of 18:47 in the Gold Rush 5K Fun Run July 29. The top female finisher was Jenna Padilla from Las Cruces, N.M.  Padilla’s winning time was 20:26. There were also two Master’s Division awards given to Pat Wiederhold of Hill City with a time of 21:21, and Beth Hollick of Custer with a time of 23:40.  Full results of the 2012 run follow:

Old Timers Baseball
The Custer Old timers baseball team took it on the chin in a 8-4 loss to the Rapid City Used to Be’s last Sunday. Rapid City scored one run each in the first four innings to take a 4-0 lead off Custer’s Randy Hughes. 
The score remained that way until the home sixth when Custer put together a three-run inning. Jack Sayles led off with a double, followed by a single by Reed LeFebvre and a triple to the wall in center field by Dave Powers, who scored on a double by Jeff Baird. 
In the seventh inning, Custer tallied again as LeFebvre came home on a bases loaded walk issued by Doug Traub. But, it was all for naught as Rapid City scored four in the top of the ninth to win.
Hughes pitched the first four innings followed by Jeff Baird’s (allowed zero runs) and Blaine Kortemeyer, who was the eventual losing pitcher allowing four runs in the top of the ninth. Rich Larson was the winning pitcher for Rapid City.
For Custer, Baird went 2-4 with two doubles, scored once and knocked in a run.  Lefebvre was 2-4 with two tallies, Dave Powers was 2-3 including a a triple and two RBIs. Bill Young and John Van Pelt also played for Custer. 
Custer manager Jack Sayles is said to be in medical seclusion at an unknown location after the tough loss.
