hree state champions return for the Custer High School track team this fall, as the Wildcats look to duplicate their feat of sweeping the conference crowns and posting solid finishes at the Class A state meet.
For the boys squad, Brennan Witt will look to defend his 800 state championship, while Tyler Schultz will be the defending state champion in the discus, as well as a heavy favorite to win the shot put competition. On the girls side, Karley Konkol has a pair of championships to defend, in both the 800 and 1600. Those three ’Cats are among the core of a team that is 70 members deep and should once again play a major factor this spring.
“It has been great getting out and not being stuck in a gym for partial workouts,” head coach Craig Black said of the team’s early season work. “It has really shown in our early track meets. We have never had this many qualify for state this early.”
Black said Witt, Schultz and Witt can all repeat their championships if they can avoid the injury bug. He also has a slew of other athletes he expects to make noise at conference, region and state.
