More ’Cats qualify for state at Speed Goat Classic

Two more Custer High School track team members qualified for the Class A State Track Meet this May by virtue of their performance at the Speed Goat Classic track meet held last Thursday in Newcastle, Wyo.
Cody Herman was the first qualifier, as he placed first in the 1600 with a time of 4:38.30. For the girls, Karley Konkol qualified for state in the 1600, winning the event with a time of 5:28.32.
Also winning for the girls was Sam McNeel, who won the long jump with a leap of 16-3 1/2. Moe Mack placed second in the high jump by clearing 4-8, while Mattisen Kelley was second in the 800 with a time of 2:36.42. The other individual placewinners for the girls included Nykyla Malinosky and Josie Engen, who placed fifth and seventh, respectively, in the 400, with times of 69.86 and 72.60.
Three relay teams placed for the girls at the meet. The 3200 team of Tori Dahlstrom, Billie Wicks, Ashlee Eggers and Kelley finished first with a time of 10:45.72, while Dahlstrom, Wicks, Eggers and Konkol combined for fourth place in the 1600 relay at a time of 4:24.94. Placing sixth in the 400 relay with a time of 57.32 was the team of Mack, Catlyn Cordell, Allison Hosman and Olivia Dahlstrom.
For the boys squad, Jared Thomsen brought home first place in the 110 hurdles with a time of 15.76, while Tyler Schultz won the shot put with a throw of 67-2. Schultz was also second in the discus with a heave of 172-3. The other second place finishes came from Brennan Witt, who was second in the 400 at 53.13 and Jared Thomsen, who was second in the 200 at 23.63.
Third place finishes came from Chad Bryant in the long jump at 20-8 and the 200 at 23.64 and Matt Dvorak in the 800 at 2:14.21. Bringing home fourth place finishes were Logan Burns in the 3200 at 10:50.79, Joel Thomsen in the 300 hurdles at 44.45, Chase Glazier in the triple jump at 39-1, Brandon Erwin in the shot put at 41-7 1/2 and Greg Witt in the discus at 146-8. Placing fifth were Shane Herman in the 1600 at 5:02.04, Tyler Jones in the 800 at 2:22.57 and Logan Huntington in the discus at 127-8.
Other placewinners for the boys included Joel Thomsen, sixth in the 110 hurdles, Logan Huntington sixth in the shot put, Chris Spain seventh in the discus, David Hernandez seventh in the 200, Israel Parsons seventh in the 800, Dakota McGee seventh in the high jump and Spain eighth in the shot put.
In the relays, the team of Glazier, Jared Thomsen, Witt and Kenneth Myers won the 1600 relay at a time of 3:34.80, while the team of Parsons, Dvorak, Jones and Chris Pinkertson placed second in the 3200 relay at 9:15.60. The 400 relay team of Hernandez, Bryant, Tanner Eiesland and Jamie Climenti finished third at 46.13.
Thursday the team will compete in a pair of meets before taking the Easter weekend off. The Southern Hills Invitational meet begins at 10 a.m., while the annual Queen City Classic will also take place Thursday in Spearfish. That meet is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
