Hunters will have 8,600 less deer tags to purchase this fall, after the state Game, Fish & Parks Commission (GF&P) decided to reduce the tags because of a decrease in deer population west of the Missouri River.
The commission voted at its most recent meeting, June 3-4 to decrease the overall West River deer hunting tags by around 8,000 for resident tags and around 600 for nonresident tags for the 2010 season. The decrease had been proposed at an earlier meeting of the commission, but was finalized at the June meeting after hearing public input on the issue.
John Kanta, regional wildlife manager for GF&P, said the reduction is a result of back-to-back hard winters killing off a large number of deer.
