Girls continue to blister track for Wildcats

Two more individuals and two more relay teams qualified for the Class A State track meet last weekend, as the Custer High School girls track team continued its torrid pace in the running events at the Black Hills Track Classic in Sturgis Saturday.
Despite the cool and breezy weather that has been the standard this spring, both Taylor Neugebauer and Breezy Boldon qualifed for the state meet in the 200, with Neugebauer running a time of 26.3, good for fifth place, and Boldon posting a time of 26.8.
Boldon and Neugebauer were also on the medley relay team that qualified for state, joining Ellie Parsons and Karley Konkol to win the event with a time of 4:29.0. Boldon, Parsons and Neugebauer teamed up with Allison Kostelecky to win the 1600 relay, with a time of 4:11.9, also a state qualifying time. In addition, that time broke a 24-year-old school record in the event.
Rounding out the championship for Custer was the 400 relay team, which continued its dominance by posting a time of 50.3 seconds. The team of Boldon, Neugebauer, Parsons and Kostelecky broke the meet record of 51.95, set by St. Thomas More in 2001. They also broke the school record of 51.02, which had stood since 1998.
The other relay team to place was the 3200 team, as Josie Thomsen, Allison Zelaya, Tanner Delannoy and Victoria Dahlstom combined to place fourth, with at ime of 10:56.0.
On the individual side of things, Melissa Flores was third in the triple jump at 32-0 3/4, Tiffany Dower was fourth in the shot put and sixth in the discus with throws of 36-10 and 105-1, while Sydney Mohr was fifth in the discus at 110-9.
For the boys squad it was once again the throwers carrying the load, as Tyler Schultz swept the titles in both the discus and shot put, winning the discus with a throw of 168-6, while winning the shot put with a toss of 56-8. Brandon Smith was second in the discus with a throw of 151-1, while placing sixth in the shot put at 47-6 1/2. Both Smith and Schultz set personal records in the shot put.
Four relay teams placed for the boys, led by the second place finish of the 3200 team. Alex Heaton, Tyler Young, Jared Thomsen and Byron Dahlstrom joined forces to finish with a time of 9:08.3. The 1600 team of Trevor Schryvers, Jordan Konkol, Heaton and Dahlstrom was third at 3:38.9, while the team of Schryvers, Justin Bierwirth, Trevor Frybarger and Sam Hosman ran the 400 relay in 49.4, good for fifth place. The 800 relay team of Schryvers, Bierwirth, Young and Frybarger finished sixth at 1:41.0.
This week starts two consecutive weeks of home meets for the Wildcats, beginning with the Black Hills Conference meet Friday morning at 10 a.m. The meet is officially hosted by Hill City.
“The athletes performed well and we hope for a good week of training inspite of the weather forecast so that we are ready and hopefully do well in conference next weekend,” head coach Craig Black said.
