If anyone needed proof the Custer High School boys basketball team is playing some of its best ball of the year, they got it Saturday night. The Wildcats went into St. Thomas More’s gym prohibitive underdogs, and although they didn’t win, they looked every part of a team to reckon with in a 53-44 loss that saw the ’Cats actually lead 14-13 after the first period. In fact, had it not been for a rough second quarter, those reading their papers Sunday morning might have read about one of the bigger upsets of the season. All this after More blasted Custer by 50 the first time the teams met this year. “It’s a positive to play as well as we did for three quarters,” head coach Larry Luitjens said. “The kids should realize if we can do it against one of the best teams in the state, we can do it more often.” Available only in the print version of the Custer County Chronicle.
